Presentation of the Sustainable Value Chains Guidelines at ExpoANTAD | 2018
On March 8th, the guidelines on how to build sustainable value chains by promoting the inclusion and strengthening of small suppliers in competitive and sustainable commercial chains were launched and presented to relevant actors within the framework of the trade fair ExpoANTAD y Alimentaria Mexico 2018, Latin-America’s most important annual meeting of the food industry and self-service stores.
The Guidelines are the first outcome of the EMM network’s partnership initiative with ANTAD (National Association of Retail Companies in Mexico) which aims at supporting the implementation of more sustainable value chains through the systematization and dissemination of the experiences of some pioneer initiatives in the Mexican retail sector. In this context, the now presented guidelines that were developed with the help of FUNDES, an international organization promoting the competitive development of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in Latin America, serve as a methodological tool for interested companies.
Diego Angelino from the EMM Network opened the presentation with an introduction about the strategic vision of this initiative, before presenting its objectives as well as the background of the activities that gave rise to the Guide in question. Thereafter, Silvia Mancilla and Corentin Laure from FUNDES presented the objectives and methodology of the Guide while also summarizing its key messages and giving recommendations for how to use the guide. Finally, Jorge Suarez, CEO of SuperKompras, one of the systematized cases that provide the basis for the Guide, presented his vision on the benefits that this instrument provides to the business agenda of commercial chains while guaranteeing a leverage effect for sustainable development at the same time.
More particularly, with the help of an exemplary business model, the Guide illustrates the business opportunities arising with the construction of inclusive and sustainable supply chains. In order to facilitate its dissemination, it also provides commercial chains with useful guidance for the replication of the practices systematized in the Guide.
Building on this presentation and the initiative in general, a strategy for the implementation of the Guide was formed by a first group of companies inlcuding SuperKompras that are interested in designing and implementing a project along the lines of the suggested practices.
